How do you hold your mouse?

The more of your hand rests on it, the longer it can be.

A right hand rests on a gaming mouse, palm on the back and fingers flat along the buttons, side view.

Palm grip (most relaxed)

Mouse length: 62 to 68% of your hand.

  • Too small if your fingertips reach past the buttons or your palm hangs off the back.
  • Too big if you stretch to reach the buttons, or the side buttons sit past your thumb.

Your whole hand lies on the mouse: palm on the back, fingers flat on the buttons.

The base of the palm rests on the back of the mouse, fingers arched with the tips on the buttons, side view.

Claw grip (fast clicks)

Mouse length: 59 to 65% of your hand.

  • Too small if your palm can’t reach the back, so only your fingers hold it.
  • Too big if your fingers flatten out instead of staying arched.

The base of your palm rests on the back of the mouse and your fingers arch up, tips on the buttons. Many gamers use it.

Only the fingertips and thumb touch the mouse, with the palm lifted clear of its back, side view.

Fingertip grip (precise aim)

Mouse length: 56 to 62% of your hand.

  • Too small if your fingers bunch up over the buttons.
  • Too big if the back of the mouse bumps into your palm.

Only your fingertips and thumb touch the mouse, and your palm stays off it. Small finger movements steer it.

Hand length being measured with a tape measure, from the tip of the middle finger to the first wrist crease.

How to measure your hand for a mouse

  1. Lay your hand flat. Palm up on a table, fingers together, thumb out to the side.
  2. Measure the length. With a ruler or tape measure, from the first crease of your wrist to the tip of your middle finger.

Width is optional. Measure straight across your knuckles, where your fingers meet your palm, without the thumb.

No ruler? A bank card is 8.56 cm (3.37 in) long. Two card lengths from your wrist crease make 17.1 cm (6.7 in), so judge the rest from there.

How big is an average hand?

These are the hands the calculator compares yours with: 4,082 men and 1,986 women in the U.S. Army, measured with calipers from 2010 to 2012 for ANSUR II.

Average man

Taller people have longer hands, but at any one height hands still vary by about 2 cm. That spread is why measuring beats estimating.

Methodology

1. Your hand

From your height, hand length is estimated with equations fitted to the 6,068 people measured in ANSUR II, one for women and one for men.

The estimate lands within 1 cm of the real hand for 81% of women and 83% of men. Hand width is estimated from hand length the same way. If you measure your hand instead, your numbers are used as they are. This computer mouse size calculator takes heights from 140 to 210 cm (4 ft 7 in to 6 ft 11 in) and hand lengths from 14 to 24 cm (5.5 to 9.5 in).

hand length from height, in mm

women=16.23 + 0.1012 × height
men=21.74 + 0.0977 × height
within 1 cm for 8 in 10 people

hand width from hand length, in mm

women=38.73 + 0.2177 × hand length
men=38.67 + 0.2566 × hand length

2. Your mouse

Mouse length is a share of hand length, and the share depends on your grip. Published guides disagree by a few points. An office chart works it out to 62 to 68% of hand length (OHCOW), and the gaming rule of thumb credited to Rocket Jump Ninja puts it at 60% (explained by Voltcave).

A palm grip, with the whole hand on the mouse, takes the full office range. Claw and fingertip grips cover less of the mouse with the hand, so their ranges step down toward the 60% rule.

Width follows the same idea: about 70% of your hand width across the knuckles, a little less for claw and fingertip, give or take 5 mm.

The list covers popular mice from about 10 to 13 cm long, from the Logitech MX Anywhere 3S to the Logitech G502 HERO.

Shape, weight, height and buttons matter too, so use the range to narrow the field, then let your hand decide.

Common questions

What size mouse do I need?

The best mouse size for your hand is about 56 to 68% of its length. Go bigger if your whole hand rests on the mouse, and a little smaller with a claw or fingertip grip. For the average man’s 19.3 cm hand that’s a mouse about 108 to 131 mm long, and for the average woman’s 18.1 cm hand about 101 to 123 mm. The mouse size calculator above works it out from your hand or your height and lists mice that fit.

What is a normal computer mouse size?

A normal computer mouse size is about 11 to 13 cm long and 6 to 7 cm wide, which covers most popular mice. Travel mice are shorter, around 10 cm, like the Logitech MX Anywhere 3S.

How do I know if a mouse fits my hand?

You shouldn’t have to stretch your fingers to reach the buttons or squeeze the mouse to steer it, your thumb should reach the side buttons, and your wrist should stay straight and relaxed. If your fingertips hang past the buttons or you find yourself gripping hard, it’s too small. If you reach for the buttons or the back of the mouse pushes into your palm, it’s too big.

Does mouse size matter for gaming?

Yes. A mouse that fits your hand is easier to control and stays comfortable for longer. That’s why many gaming mice come in two or three sizes of the same shape, like Zowie’s EC1, EC2 and EC3: you can keep a shape you like and pick the gaming mouse size that fits. If you hold your mouse with just your fingertips, go a little shorter than if your whole hand rests on it.

Do left-handed people need a different mouse?

Only if the mouse is shaped for the right hand. Symmetrical mice work in either hand, but sculpted ones like the Logitech MX Master 3S are right-handed only. Matching hand size to mouse size works the same either way.

Can the right mouse size help with posture and wrist strain?

Yes. The Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers say the correct mouse size will “help to reduce awkward postures and contact stress on the hand and wrist.” Size is one part of a comfortable setup, along with where the mouse sits, your desk height and regular breaks.
